Monitoring students’ activities in Google Docs

 2011-10-26 |

While Google’s “office” applications–Document, Spreadsheet, Presentation–are great for (collaborative) learning, they present a challenge to teachers when it comes to keep an overview of what is going on, and which student might need attention.

For tracking the activity and progress of students, we have implemented adapters to the Google Docs API which allow to provide the teacher and student with detailed information. When assigning a writing task, teachers can monitor the progress of each student in real-time and provide assistance when needed. This feedback by the teacher can be given online through Google Doc’s commenting tools, where the teacher can even point to specific sections of a document and guide the student to better results. In addition, teachers can chat with students synchronously in the context of a specific document.
